Student Guide¶
This guide explains how to use the HLS Player activity as a student.
Opening the Activity¶
Click the HLS Player link in your course. The video player loads directly on the page — no additional software, plugin, or app is required.
Browser requirement
JavaScript must be enabled. Any modern browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge) supports HLS playback natively.
Playing the Video¶
The Video.js player provides standard controls:
| Control | Action |
|---|---|
| Play / Pause | Start or stop playback |
| Progress bar | Shows the current position in the video |
| Volume | Adjust or mute audio |
| Full screen | Expand the player to fill the screen |
Your Progress¶
Below the player you will see:
Your Progress: X%
This number updates in real time as you watch and reflects the furthest point you have reached — not your current playback position.
Your progress is saved automatically: - Every 10 seconds while playing - When you pause - When the video ends
You can close the tab or browser at any time. Your progress will be waiting when you return.
Resume Playback¶
When you re-open the activity, the video automatically resumes from where you last left off. You do not need to do anything — just press play.
Seek Restriction¶
If your teacher has enabled seek restriction, you cannot skip forward past the furthest point you have already watched.
- You can freely rewind to any section you have already seen.
- A small 1-second buffer is allowed, so minor forward seeks near the current position are permitted.
- If you try to jump ahead, the player automatically returns you to the last valid position.
Note
This restriction only applies to seeking forward. Rewinding is always allowed.
Playback Speed¶
If your teacher has enabled speed adjustment, a gear icon appears in the player controls. Click it to choose:
- 0.5× (half speed)
- 1× (normal — default)
- 1.5× (faster)
- 2× (double speed)
Speed changes do not affect your progress tracking.
Completing the Activity¶
The activity is marked complete automatically once you have watched the required percentage (set by your teacher, typically 95%). You do not need to click anything — completion and grading update in the background the next time your progress is saved.
You can check your completion status in the course page or via the Moodle progress tracker.
